Glossary of Swahili Terms
This page contains a list of all the Swahili words used on this site and their English translations:
Note: Swahili has the same vowel sounds as Spanish: a=ah (as in 'saw'), e=ay (as in 'say'), i=ee (as in 'see'), o=oh (as in 'so'), and u=ooh (as in 'Sue'). In Swahili, stress is on the second to last syllable.
Afrika - Africa
chatu - python
chui - leopard
duma - cheetah
fisi - hyena
Jambo! - Hello!
kiboko - hippopotamus
kifaru - rhinoceros
kontinenti - continent
mamba - crocodile
mbu - mosquito
mbuni - ostrich
mchwa - termite (often called 'white ant')
muhanga -aardvark
ngiri - warthog
nyani -baboon
nyati - water buffalo
nyumbu - wildebeest (also called 'gnu')
punda milia - zebra
safari - safari or trip
Safari nzuri! - Have a good trip!
simba - lion
swara - gazelle or antelope
tai - vulture (same word is used for a kind of eagle)
tembo (also ndovu) - elephant
twiga - giraffe
wibari - rock hyrax (also called 'dassie' or 'coney')
