Aarluq
means killer whale in Inuktitut.
What
do fish, birds, reptiles, whales, seals, walruses, sea lions, otters, squid,
sea turtles, penguins, moose and polar bears all have in common? They're all
on the killer whale's menu. Is it any wonder they are called KILLER whales?
They are the world's largest mammalian predators. So much for polar bears
being at the top of the Arctic food chain. These fast-swimming, black and
white members of the dolphin family even hunt, in cooperative groups--like
packs of wolves, the sea's largest whales which are many times their size.
Killer whales or orcas can be found in all of the world's oceans and sometimes
even swim up large freshwater rivers in search of food. Of mammals, only humans
are more widely distributed on the earth.
