Nirliq
means Canada goose in Inuktitut.
Honk, honk, honk! Just before winter sets in, in mid-September, Canada geese
gather in huge numbers on and around shallow Arctic lakes, forming noisy traffic
jams. During the spring and summer months, June through August, they will
have feasted on shoots, roots, seeds, bulbs, grains and berries, taking full
advantage of the Arctic's yearly growth spurt. Fattened up and with winter
in the wings, the geese gather to find their flockmates and then take off
in V's to warmer climes and greener pastures. Honk, honk, honk!
