In
rain forest mythology, jaguars are more than mere mortal felines. Like harpy
eagles, boa constrictors and other fearsome rain forest beasts, they are thought
to have supernatural powers which can be used to ensnare humans that tread
upon their territory. As the poem implies, jaguars typically hunt at dawn,
dusk and after dark. As the title implies, the poem uses a 5-7-5 syllable
haiku formula (with the word 'power' sneaking into the one syllable slot -
like 'hour').
