Peccaries
are pig-like animals that roam the rain forest in bands of about twenty
members. They are also skunk-like, in the sense that they have musk glands
in their back ends which emit a fowl smelling odor. They use this 'air-defense'
whenever they feel threatened by predators. Still, their nasty emissions
don't stop humans from eating them: they are considered a tasty meat by
many rain forest people. (By the way, the peccary's cousins in the poem
were: in Asia--babirusas, in Africa-- warthogs, in Europe--wild boars,
and in North America--pigs.
